Telstra "Account Suspended" Email — How Australians Can Spot This Scam

An email that appears to be from Telstra says your account has been suspended or your bill is overdue. It asks you to click a link to reactivate or pay. Telstra sends billing notifications through the My Telstra app and your registered email — not through generic emails threatening suspension.

How This Scam Works

You receive an email that appears to be from Telstra saying your account has been suspended, your bill is overdue, or there's been suspicious activity on your account. The email asks you to click a link to reactivate your account or update your payment details.

The link leads to a fake Telstra website that captures your login credentials and payment information. With your Telstra account access, scammers can make unauthorized changes, add services, or use your identity for further fraud.

Scamwatch (ACCC) reports that Telstra is one of the most impersonated brands in Australian phishing campaigns. In the major Optus data breach aftermath, scammers also increased Telstra-themed phishing, hoping recipients would be on heightened alert about their telco accounts.

Red Flags

  • Claims your Telstra account is suspended or will be terminated
  • Sender address is not from @telstra.com.au or @online.telstra.com.au
  • Link does not point to telstra.com.au or my.telstra.com.au
  • Threatens immediate disconnection or account closure
  • Asks for login credentials or full credit card details

How to Verify Legitimately
