How This Scam Works

You receive an email that appears to be from the Revenue Commissioners (Revenue) claiming you are entitled to a tax refund or rebate. It asks you to click a link and enter your PPS (Personal Public Service) number, bank details, and other personal information to process the refund.

The fake Revenue website looks similar to the real ROS (Revenue Online Service) or myAccount portal. Once you enter your information, scammers use your PPS number and banking details for identity theft and financial fraud.

Revenue processes all refunds through your Revenue myAccount or ROS — never through emailed links. FraudSMART, the fraud awareness initiative by Banking & Payments Federation Ireland, regularly warns about Revenue impersonation as one of the most common scams affecting Irish consumers.
