How This Scam Works
High Risk — Billing Phishing Scam
Netflix will never ask you to update payment information through an email link. Billing issues are always handled within the Netflix app or website.
You receive an email that appears to be from Netflix saying your payment could not be processed and your account will be suspended unless you update your billing information. The email includes a prominent button like "Update Payment Now" or "Restart Membership."
Clicking the link takes you to a convincing replica of Netflix's login page. After entering your credentials, you're prompted to re-enter your credit card details, billing address, and sometimes even your Social Security number. The scammers now have both your Netflix login and your financial information.
These emails are particularly effective because Netflix genuinely does email users about payment failures — making the scam harder to distinguish at a glance. According to the FTC, streaming service impersonation is one of the fastest-growing categories of phishing fraud, with Netflix among the most commonly spoofed brands.
Red Flags
- Claims your payment failed and account will be suspended
- Sender address is not from @netflix.com
- Link leads to a website that is not netflix.com
- Asks for credit card details, billing address, or personal identification
- Uses urgency language like 'Update within 24 hours or lose your account'
The key difference between a real Netflix email and a fake one is where the link takes you. Hover over any button before clicking — if the URL is not netflix.com, it is a scam.
What You Should Do
What To Do
- Do not click any links in the email
- Open Netflix directly by typing netflix.com in your browser
- Log in and check your Account page for any payment issues
- If there is a real billing issue, Netflix will show a notification when you log in
- Report the email to Netflix through their official help center at help.netflix.com
How to Verify Legitimately
Go directly to netflix.com and log in. If there is a genuine payment issue, Netflix will display a banner at the top of the page asking you to update your payment method. You can also check your email preferences in Account Settings to see what Netflix actually emails you about.
